American Sparkling Wines
America has a tradition of sparkling wines that goes back to the middle of the 19th century. Today, the sparkling wines made here range from simple, easy-going wines to complex, aged wines that are reminiscent of fine Champagne. The most famous examples come from California, but other states produce excellent sparkling wines as well.
Interestingly, while Champagne is a legally protected name for wines from that region of France, you can still find some wines labelled “California Champagne”. That’s because brands like Korbel have been using the term for so long that they were grandfathered in when the legal protection for the name came about.
